How to Get an OpenRouter API Key on Android
BYOK means bring your own key. Instead of sending every user through one shared model account, Phantom Tavern lets you connect your own model provider. OpenRouter is one of the easiest starting points because it gives access to many models from one API.
Create an OpenRouter account
Open OpenRouter in your mobile browser and sign in. After your account is ready, go to the API keys area from the account dashboard.
Create a new key and copy it immediately. Treat this key like a password because it can be used to call models through your account.
Add the key to Phantom Tavern
Open Phantom Tavern, go to provider settings, choose OpenRouter, and paste the key into the API key field. Save the provider and select a model that fits your budget and roleplay style.
If a request fails, check that the key has not been truncated, your OpenRouter account has access to the selected model, and your phone has network access.
Keep costs predictable
Start with a low-cost model while testing prompts and characters. Once your setup feels stable, move to a stronger model for longer scenes or more complex character behavior.
FAQ
Is OpenRouter required?
No. It is a convenient option, but Phantom Tavern is built around multi-provider workflows.
Is my API key stored by the website?
No. The official website does not collect your API key. Provider settings belong inside the Android app.
